Install PyCharm on Ubuntu 18.04 step by step instructions

Install PyCharm Ubuntu from command line

  1. Start by opening a terminal window and execution of the bellow apt command. Select your preferred version to install:
    $ sudo snap install pycharm-community --classic
    $ sudo snap install pycharm-professional --classic
    $ sudo snap install pycharm-educational --classic

    All done.

  2. You can start the PyCharm using the below command:
    $ pycharm-community
    $ pycharm-professional
    $ pycharm-educational

  1. Use top left Activities menu to open the Software application.

  2. Search for pycharm application. Select your preferred PyCharm version to install.

  4. Enter your username and password. Your user needs to belong to sudo administrative group.

 You might be thinking how is it possible to install pycharm using both command line and graphical user interface, well it's possible but not as you are thinking. To install pycharm using command line interface, first of all go to the pycharm download page on and download the latest version for ubuntu, you should check the system requirement, after downloading the tar file you just go to your download folder and uncompress the tar file, after uncompressing the file navigate or double click the uncompressed file, it should look like the image below:


 After that, locate the bin folder on the top right corner and left click, it will be like the image below:


 Then locate open in terminal and right click and the folder will open in terminal like the below image:


 Then run the below command to install pycharm.


after running the command pycharm will be installed.


In case you receive the following error message during the PyCharm loading:

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'distutils.core'

you may fix this issue by installation of the python3-distutils package using the following command:

$ sudo apt-get install python3-distutils
